Ms Sona Alungal Sadique

Sona is a molecular biologist currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Dr. Conny Turni and co-supervision of Dr. Sean Bisset. Her research focuses on eliminating biofilms in respiratory diseases in pigs caused by antibiotic-resistant strains. She previously worked as a Senior Research Assistant at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) under Prof. Mark Blaskovich, where she specialized in nanopore sequencing of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Sona holds a Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology (research extensive) from The University of Queensland, where she was awarded the Dean’s Commendation for Academic Excellence. During her studies, she completed a Summer Research Internship at QAAFI, contributing to a project on developing natural antimicrobial products. Before moving to Australia, she gained extensive research experience in India, working as a Research Officer and as a Research Fellow. She has gained expertise in microbiology, recombinant DNA technology, animal cell culture, and plant tissue culture. Sona also holds a master’s in molecular biology and genetic engineering and a bachelor’s in biotechnology from Mahatma Gandhi University, India. Her career reflects a strong passion for research and a commitment to tackling challenges in antimicrobial resistance and biofilm management.
