Prof Ricardo J. Soares Magalhães

Professor Soares Magalhães (LVM MSc PhD DiplECVPH) is a veterinarian and a zoonotic disease epidemiologist with qualifications in both human and veterinary public health. He is currently Professor of Zoonotic Disease Epidemiology and Biosecurity and Director of the Queensland Alliance for One Health Sciences (QAOHS) within the University of Queensland, Australia. His team’s research program focuses on advancing digital transformation and geospatial data analytics for evaluating how biosecurity vulnerabilities of animal industries impact on the geographical variation of zoonotic diseases in animal and human populations. In his role as Director of QAOHS he is responsible for fostering strategic research collaborations with industry and government and attracting research investment to answer key questions regarding the effectiveness of zoonotic disease control strategies in Australia and developing countries. He serves as Research Lead of the Analytics Program of the Cooperative Research Centre for Solving Antimicrobial Resistance in Agribusinesses, Food and the Environment and is an Innaugural Board Member of VetCompass Australia. Internationally he serves as Technical Advisor to the WHO Southeast Asia Regional Office on Zoonotic Disease Surveillance and Response and he is the Oceania Representative on the International Scientific Steering Committee of PREZODE (Preventing ZOonotic Disease Emergence) Global Health Initiative.
