  • PhD Candidate
  • The University of Queensland

Sooriya is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Professor Mark Blaskovich. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Northumbria University and previously worked as a Research Officer at A*STAR IDLabs in Singapore. His research experience spans developing high-throughput antibody discovery platforms, environmental pathogen surveillance and next-generation sequencing analysis.

For his PhD, as part of CEAStAR, Sooriya will be developing a culture-free, nanoparticle enhanced approach to directly enrich for whole cell and non-culturable bacteria from wastewater samples. In collaboration with industry partner MGI, Sooriya will apply advanced sequencing technologies to characterise the enriched bacterial population and identify antimicrobial resistant genes. This work aims to improve our understanding of how antimicrobial resistance disseminates through wastewater systems into the broader environment.
